So I flew to San Francisco on Saturday (which is an 11 hour flight). After the first two movies (there was a great selection available), your brain turns mush and boredom hits. Just 8 more hours… To cut a long flight short, I finally arrived at the WildPalms hotel.

After a good “nights” rest (waking up at 05:00 due to jetlag), waiting for the breakfast to be served and eventually having breakfast, I find went for a nice long walk. ( pictures ). I saw the main office of Apple and had a good cup of coffee at StarBucks. When I got back to my room, I relaxed a bit and prepared for the Ubuntu Developer Summit which will start tomorrow

Ahoi landrots, when will you join our crew? Our ship is sailing towards freedom and infinate treasure! Get away from all that land and join us! We will sail around the globe and we will become one with the great sea (I just hope we will not sail too far and fall off of the world).

Last weekend I was at the Ubuntu-NL WinterMeeting in Den Haag. The day started with rolling out of my bed at about 08.00 in the morning, I’m not used to this, not on a saturday. After being under the shower I was finally awake and had my breakfast. Now my day really started. I packed up my laptop and drove to the backery, where I had ordered a lot of apple turnovers and buns with sausages (they tasted great, by the way). Then I drove in about 1.5 hours to Den Haag and picked up ablomen. When we arrived at the building where the meeting would take place, our work really started.

We had to hurry, since it was about 11.15 and the meeting was supposed to start at 12.00. I got a quick tour of the premesis from ablomen, after which we unloaded the car. We put all the drinks and all the food on tables in the room across the hallway. Then we wanted to prepare the conference room, but the first Ubuntites had already arrived. So I turned the coffee machine on and the nice aroma started to fill the kitchen. Then we had to move quite a lot of chairs and set them up, where we got some help from the people who were a bit early. Then we set up my internet connection and the screen where we pointed the beamer to.

The meeting started with a having some drinks and talking to each new arrival. At about 13.00 I presented the schedule for the meeting with a little speech. After that everybody started socializing again, which was great. Then we had a discussion round, more socializing, another discussion round, pizza and even more socializing. It was great seeing the community in action! There were quite a lot of discussions and I think we made some real progress. After the pizza, most of the Ubuntites had some conversations with eachother and went home. Who can blame them, it was about 20.00.

After the meeting, the Ubuntu-NL forum and the Ubuntu-NL IRC channel suddenly were a lot more active. What was even better, is that the people who were at the meeting, knew eachother. This gives the forum and the channel an even better ambiance, since you now know who you are talking to.

The meeting was a great success and I can’t wait for the next meeting, I just hope I will have more time to talk to everybody

A few weeks ago I was at Sogeti at a presentation about crowdsourcing. I started off by finding the building where it took place. When we finally arrived, we were greeted and we left our coats at the entrance. Then we proceeded to the cellar, in which the event took place. We got our nametags and started the evening with a healthy glass of fresh orange juice. It didn’t take long before we started conversations with lots of different people. When it started to get interesting, we got interrupted. Dinner was served! Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to compliment the chef, since the food tasted delicious.

After dinner we went to the presentation hall, in which two interesting presentations took place. I’ll summarize, mostly because it’s a bit blurry for me. A few of the more interesting questions that arrose where: “Is crowdsourcing viable for enterprises?” and “How do you crowdsource your products?”. It’s all about creating a win-win situation for both parties and working with the community (it’s not a dictatorship). Look at what Wikipedia did all those year ago, now that’s a great business case. But most businesses will need to make ‘sacrifices’, since they need to let go of their treasured “it’s mine and you can’t have (read) it” mindset.

Afgelopen dinsdag attendeerde ik eventjes de HollandOpen borrel. Gelukkig was ik een half uur te vroeg aanwezig en kon alvast met wat interessante personen praten en me inleven in het sfeertje. Gelukkig kon de presentatie, die verloren geacht werd, nog recovered worden. Om 17.00 was het tijd om met de borrel te beginnen, rond 17.40 begonnen de presentaties (met veel discussies) en het geheel werd afgesloten met het vervolg van de borrel.

De eerste presentatie werd gepresenteerd door een afgevaardigde van Novell en ging over de samenwerking van Novell met Microsoft. Uiteraard heeft Novell enkel de beste bedoelingen en wil zich niet tegen de Linux wereld keren. Als bedrijf zijnde is dit natuurlijk een meesterzet, maar de vraag is of de community hier blij mee is. Zal het hun de kop kosten of niet?
De tweede presentatie ging over het ODF formaat. Het bestaat natuurlijk uit een aantal verschillende XML formaten (.odt, .odp, .ods etc.) die voornamelijk door alle grotere tekstverwerkers ondersteund worden, behalve door MS Office. Het ODF formaat is inmiddels ook verheven tot ISO standaard en is veel volwassener dan het “open” OpenXML formaat van Microsoft, wat helemaal niet open is. Een ander interesant thema wat aangesneden werd was dat de overheid een dataretentiewet heeft, waarin staat dat zij 30 jaar lang hun gegevens moeten bewaren. Hoe wil je dat garanderen met een gesloten formaat? Probeer tegenwoordig maar eens een oud MS Word bestand te openen, dat zal niet lukken.
Al met al was het een zeer interessante en geslaagde avond, alhoewel ik pas om 22.30 terug thuis was. Dit is zeker iets wat ik vaker wil doen, maar hopelijk is het de volgende keer een stuk dichter bij huis.
P.S. HollandOpen is een relatief nieuw OpenSource platform, welk wil over OpenSource informeren, discussieren en eventueel deze wil invoeren.

Gisteren was het weer eens zo ver, wederom een beursbezoek. Deze keer ging ik naar de ICTme beurs in het WTC te Rotterdam, welke gericht is op 3e en 4e jaars informatici. Gelukkig blijken er toch nog genoeg bedrijven te zijn die zowel afstudeerders zoeken als nieuwe werknemers.

Op de beurs hebben mijn klasgenoten en ik een paar stands bezocht, een paar presenaties/workshops gevolgd en natuurlijk nog even genoten van de aanwezige lunch mogelijkheid. Helaas was sfeer van de beurs niet zakelijk genoeg, maar daar ben ik iets te precies in. Er waren standhouders die een iPod e.d. verloten en zulke zaken zijn in mijn ogen toch veel te consument gericht en geven geen zakelijke indruk. Dezelfde positie heb ik tegenover zogenoemde ‘boothbabes’ oftewel promotie-dames, ik praat dan toch liever met iemand van de onderneming met die ik een diepgaand gesprek kan hebben.

Na de beurs ben ik samen met een klagenoot te voet vertrokken naar het Centraal Station, waar ik door Hiddenwolf opgepikt werd. Vervolgens hebben we nog een dik uur in Rotown wat gedronken en natuurlijk ook de nodige gespreksstof doorgenomen. Al met al een geslaagde dag
