A few days ago a friend of mine came by my place. Finally I got a wireless access point so I can work everywhere in the house. Since I’m a bit paranoid I configured the AP to have MAC filtering and use WPA2. Offcourse it worked on my laptop but not on the laptop of my friend. Then the shit really hit the fan.

It started off by him using Windows XP SP2, well it’s his choice. Then we noticed that the WLAN PCMCIA card *should* support WPA2, so we tried connecting to my home network, which offcourse failed. We noticed that his Windows had no WPA2 support, but he had a fully updated Windows XP system. Finally we found, downloaded and installed the Windows XP WPA2 support patch which was released on 05-09-2004! Since nobody uses WPA2 (feel the sarcasm) it’s not important to include it in the default Windows updates…

At the end we couldn’t connect to my home network, since apparently the network card was not WPA2 compatible. But it showed me once more why I like Linux so much.

A few weeks ago I was at Sogeti at a presentation about crowdsourcing. I started off by finding the building where it took place. When we finally arrived, we were greeted and we left our coats at the entrance. Then we proceeded to the cellar, in which the event took place. We got our nametags and started the evening with a healthy glass of fresh orange juice. It didn’t take long before we started conversations with lots of different people. When it started to get interesting, we got interrupted. Dinner was served! Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to compliment the chef, since the food tasted delicious.

After dinner we went to the presentation hall, in which two interesting presentations took place. I’ll summarize, mostly because it’s a bit blurry for me. A few of the more interesting questions that arrose where: “Is crowdsourcing viable for enterprises?” and “How do you crowdsource your products?”. It’s all about creating a win-win situation for both parties and working with the community (it’s not a dictatorship). Look at what Wikipedia did all those year ago, now that’s a great business case. But most businesses will need to make ‘sacrifices’, since they need to let go of their treasured “it’s mine and you can’t have (read) it” mindset.

Currently I’m totally swamped with work, as usual. Somehow I can’t find time to rest, and I mean really rest. Luckily the “Christmas-vacation” came along, which gave me some time to recharge my empty batteries. It’s becoming usual to work hard and fill up all of your free time and just work towards your vacation. When it’s vacation, it’s finally time to relax (and still work a little bit) and recharge your batteries, which are probably very low.

Somehow I have dozends of projects on hold or on ice and as soon as I have a little spare time left, those projects pop up again. You keep yourself occupied and hopefully make a nice buck out of it too.

Once again I was faced with the choice of choosing between Dutch, German and English. The language you should write your blog in, should be the language which the larger amount of your readers can actually read and understand. Since the defacto standard language on the web is English (at least for Europe and the USA), I chose it for my blog. Almost all of my friends and online contacts can understand English, so the choice was easy.

Afgelopen dinsdag attendeerde ik eventjes de HollandOpen borrel. Gelukkig was ik een half uur te vroeg aanwezig en kon alvast met wat interessante personen praten en me inleven in het sfeertje. Gelukkig kon de presentatie, die verloren geacht werd, nog recovered worden. Om 17.00 was het tijd om met de borrel te beginnen, rond 17.40 begonnen de presentaties (met veel discussies) en het geheel werd afgesloten met het vervolg van de borrel.

De eerste presentatie werd gepresenteerd door een afgevaardigde van Novell en ging over de samenwerking van Novell met Microsoft. Uiteraard heeft Novell enkel de beste bedoelingen en wil zich niet tegen de Linux wereld keren. Als bedrijf zijnde is dit natuurlijk een meesterzet, maar de vraag is of de community hier blij mee is. Zal het hun de kop kosten of niet?
De tweede presentatie ging over het ODF formaat. Het bestaat natuurlijk uit een aantal verschillende XML formaten (.odt, .odp, .ods etc.) die voornamelijk door alle grotere tekstverwerkers ondersteund worden, behalve door MS Office. Het ODF formaat is inmiddels ook verheven tot ISO standaard en is veel volwassener dan het “open” OpenXML formaat van Microsoft, wat helemaal niet open is. Een ander interesant thema wat aangesneden werd was dat de overheid een dataretentiewet heeft, waarin staat dat zij 30 jaar lang hun gegevens moeten bewaren. Hoe wil je dat garanderen met een gesloten formaat? Probeer tegenwoordig maar eens een oud MS Word bestand te openen, dat zal niet lukken.
Al met al was het een zeer interessante en geslaagde avond, alhoewel ik pas om 22.30 terug thuis was. Dit is zeker iets wat ik vaker wil doen, maar hopelijk is het de volgende keer een stuk dichter bij huis.
P.S. HollandOpen is een relatief nieuw OpenSource platform, welk wil over OpenSource informeren, discussieren en eventueel deze wil invoeren.

Aangezien ik steeds meer de CLI ga gebruiken, is toch wel fijn als je geen 640*480 hebt. Als ik met mijn fluxbox bezig ben heb ik een relatief klein font en draai ik 1024*768, lekker overzichtelijk. Zodra ik dus de X server kill, ga ik terug naar een ontzettend onoverzichtelijk en lelijk scherm.

De oplossing blijkt in het gebruik van de framebuffer te liggen die je kan enablen door een simpele “vga=xxx” bootflag aan je kernel toe te voegen. Het werkt zeer fijn, totdat je hibernate gebruikt. Zodra ik uit hibernate kom en de X-server start, blijft deze zich continu opnieuw opstarten, tot deze het systeem vast laat lopen. Erg nasty. Dit probleem heb ik trouwens ook als ik handmatig het MAC adres van mijn netwerkkaart aanpas. Bug report link

Vorige week liep een klasgenoot van me te zeuren over een feature die OpenOffice Writer mist ten opzichte van MS Office Word. Het gaat namelijk om de shortcut CTRL+SHIFT+C en CTRL+SHIFT+V die er in Word voor zorgen dat je enkel de style (headings etc.) kopieert en dat je die direct ergens anders kan toepassen. Dit kan voor sommigen de opmaak van documenten versnellen.

Aangezien hij te lui was om voor die feature een request te doen, heb ik het maar voor hem gedaan. Natuurlijk is mijn achterliggende agenda dat Writer hierdoor gewoon steeds beter gaat worden en uiteindelijk de de-facto tekstverwerker wordt. Feature request link

Vorige week begonnen de keuzevakken Linux en OpenSource, waar ik aan deelneem. Vorige week vond het eerste college OpenSource plaats, waar ikzelf een korte introductie heb gegeven met betrekking tot Linux. Vandaag vond het tweede college plaats en het was zeer interessant, alhoewel het college ruim 3 uur in beslag nam.

Er passeerden allerlei zaken de revue, waaronder: Stallman, Torvalds, Raymond, Linux (ook Ubuntu), allerlei OpenSource projecten, communities, licenties, GNU, peer-to-peer review, crowdsourcing, lopende OpenSource projecten en meer. Het is een van de weinige vakken waar ik veel meepraat en die ook echt interessant zijn. Helaas is dit een keuzevak, dit zou eigenlijk in de vakkenpakket verwerkt moeten worden.

Het was een heerlijke niet-slaapverwekkende vrijdagochtend (P.S. ik moest ook het internet ‘fixxen’ aangezien alles hier MAC restricted is. Dus even een MAC adres geleend en ingetikt in de terminal van de MAC)
